We’re back with another Behind the Leash feature, where we introduce you to the amazing humans who make up our Off Leash MKE team! This month, we’re excited to introduce Emma, who has been part of the Off Leash team for about six months. With years of experience working with animals, Emma especially enjoys building relationships with shy pets and earning their trust through patience and a gentle approach. She loves getting to know each pet and their unique personalities, and she feels lucky to be trusted with the care of Milwaukee’s pets. Continue reading to get to know Emma a little better!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how long you've been part of our team? What do you appreciate most about working with Off Leash MKE?
My name is Emma, and I have been with Off Leash MKE for about six months now. It's crazy how quickly time flies when you truly love your job! I love animals and have been working with them since high school. Whether at the shelter or in a pet resort, my strength has always been bonding with the shy animals. It is incredibly rewarding to gain their trust after much patience and a gentle approach. In fact, one of the things I appreciate most about working with Off Leash MKE is the relationships I build with pets and their parents. It is truly an honor to be trusted with Milwaukee's fur babies. I take it seriously!
Emma’s beloved cat Cosmo
Do you have any pets of your own? If so, tell us about them.
Yes, I have the most handsome tuxedo kitty named Cosmo. After just two weeks of fostering him, I knew it was going to be a foster failure. He is just the most perfect boy. He follows me around the house, demands cuddles as soon as I enter the door, and flops for belly rubs. Cosmo is just the biggest cuddle bug in the world, but he loves playing too. One of his favorites is fetch. I made a commitment to playing fetch with him everyday, otherwise he attacks my ankles haha. I love him with my whole heart!
What are three things you ALWAYS bring with you on dog walks?
Three things I always bring with me on dog walks include: comfortable walking shoes, dog treats, and poop bags. When you're walking around all day, you need shoes that will actually get you through the day! Treats are great for motivating dogs on a walk. It is also a quick emergency tool to use for when I need to distract a dog from something they may react to, like another dog or a pedestrian nearby. And of course, poop bags are a crucial tool to have at all times! Do I really need to explain this one?
What's your go-to tip for clients looking to provide the best care for their pet?
One of my go-to tips for a client looking to provide the best care for their pet is to communicate your pet's needs. Off Leash MKE has a great team that will go above and beyond to provide your pet with their essentials and make every visit a positive experience! That's another thing I love about working with Off Leash MKE-- I deeply enjoy working with a company that truly cares about their clients.

Are there any favorite dog parks or pet-friendly spots you recommend in our area?
If your dog loves sniffing or rolling in grass but you also want to walk in the shade, Kern Park is the perfect place for you! There are plenty of trees that provide shade and ample grass for your pup to sniff for hours and not get bored. I also love how Kern Park is a very open area, so you could create distance between yourself and bikers, pedestrians, or other dogs if needed.
Besides working with animals, what are your hobbies or interests?
Besides working with animals, I love cooking and baking. I grew up with a Laotian and Chinese mom and a Hmong dad, so you knowww I grew up eating GOOD! My mom is an amazing cook and baker, even having her own catering business called Ahoui's Cooking. I took inspiration from her and started my own pop-up bakery business called Abundant Gatherings, where I sell pay-what-you-can baked goods, primarily sourdough loaves and healthy muffins. If you want, you can follow me on Instagram: abundantgatheringsproject Thank you, and I am looking forward to meeting you and your pet!
