Tails of the Team: Meet Laika, Archer, & Marci

LIndsey and Laika

At Off Leash MKE, our team’s love for animals goes beyond the workday — it’s a big part of who we are. In this edition of our Tails of the Team series, we’re excited to introduce you to Lindsey’s pets: Laika, Archer, and Marci! From Laika, the energetic Husky with a larger-than-life personality, to Archer and Marci, her two sweet cats, each has brought unique lessons, joy, and inspiration into Lindsey’s life. Their presence has shaped not only her days at home but also the care and compassion she brings to our clients and their pets every day. Continue reading to learn more.

What are your pets’ names, breeds, and ages, and how did they come into your life?

Laika is a 6 1/2 year old Siberian Husky, Archer is a 5 year old Domestic Long Hair cat, and Marci is a 4 year old Tortie.

Laika came into my life unexpectedly - my mom was helping her friend rehome her dog. While she was staying at my house, I fell in love with her and had to keep her. Archer was at Elmbrook Humane Society - when I first saw him, I knew he was perfect. Marci was a cat from Texas and was set up at the Petsmart I was working at. The day she was up for adoption was my birthday so it lined up perfectly!

What is your dog’s personality like? Any quirks or unique traits?

Laika has a very loud personality, she will let you know when she doesn't like something and when she wants something. Cuddling is always on her terms but when she does, it is the sweetest! Laika loves all humans but is very picky on the dogs that she likes.

How has having your dog(s) influenced your approach to pet care or dog walking?

Miss Laika has prepared me for so many of the challenges I face as a pet care professional. I use to say to my training classes that if you are having troubles with training, I have probably been there at one point or another. She has taught me to be patient, to take my time, and to look for signs that she is not having fun.

How do you incorporate Fear Free principles when caring for your dog(s)?

All of our training is Fear Free, using positive reinforcement to get through anything we are facing. Recently we have been working on "place" - when people come over, Laika gets super excited and wants to jump on them. So, when we hear a knock at the door, I give the “place” cue to send her to her designated spot, and then she gets a Kong to keep her busy while people are coming in!

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your dog?

My favorite thing to do together is taking her out on the long line watching her run around and have the time of her life!

Are there any particular games, exercises, or routines you do with your dog that you recommend to clients?

Laika has a strong preference for the treat dispensing toys so we use those a lot - they make breakfast and dinner time more fun! Another trick is to put a little water in some food and freeze it - it gives her a fun challenge. For physical stimulation, getting out on a long time and running in an open field is always a blast!
